History, nature and plenty to do outdoors: Viana do Castelo lies where the River Lima meets the Atlantic.

History and culture
Wander through the old town with its cobbled streets and historic buildings. Above the city stands the Basilica of Santa Luzia, with a wide view over the Atlantic.
Local markets, galleries and traditional festivals such as the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Agonia bring you close to Portuguese culture.
Nature
Green hills, the Atlantic and the River Lima. Walk up Monte de Santa Luzia for the panoramic view, or spend the day on one of the beaches along the coast.

Sport and the outdoors
Along the coast you can windsurf, kitesurf and surf. On the River Lima you can paddle by kayak, and the mountains around the city have hiking and cycling trails. The city also hosts sporting events and competitions.
A taste of Viana
Fresh fish and seafood, local specialities and good wine. Try bacalhau (salt cod) or fish freshly grilled at the harbour, and take your time in the small restaurants and cafés.
